To be honest, I also think I support the Obsidian developers more, and like having the option of customizing my experience with CSS and different plug-ins.

It’s free (though I do pay for syncing and Obsidian Publish). I own my files and PKMS are about longevity, for me at least 2. I use Obsidian over Roam Research because 1. I use the Zettelkasten method with Obsidian because I want to ensure I’m consistently reviewing notes/contextualizing new learnings in my broader knowledge base. I used Evernote for a while for note taking, but I found that with Evernote things just kind of end up in the abyss and I never look at them again. I use Obsidian for my PKMS, and Notion for project/life management because the databases make it really easy to organize complex projects (for now I prefer it to a convoluted setup with Obsidian’s dataview plugin, but I may switch everything over to Obsidian eventually). I have used all of these except CraftDoc. Of course, depending on your needs/skillset, you might lean towards one of the other apps they have their advantages and cutting-edge features, though I find you have to invest more time and energy into those apps to make them run smoothly. Craft is probably the safest option, especially given how quickly the dev team release updates and new features. You really can't go wrong with Evernote, though its tendency to lag and lack of relationship-building features has led me to look elsewhere.

  • Con: lacks some of the more powerful features like queries and multi-tag filtering, though these will likely be added in 2022.

Superb iOS apps, and on Windows you can use the web app. Easily link to other notes/blocks by pressing and typing (it brings up a pop-up menu). Now has Daily Notes which you can sync with your calendar.

Create sub-notes to keep things organised. Easy to drag and drop blocks of text around a document. Pro: a note-based app like Evernote, but very fast (no lag) and seamless sync.Made for users who want a consumer-friendly UI with some of the newer features found in Roam/Obsidian. Craft: The app I eventually settled on.Con: Markdown editor (dealbreaker), difficult to sync (though they might have improved on that in 2021).Obsidian: Similar to Roam in its fundamentals, Obsidian also targets users who don't mind a less consumer-friendly UI.Takes a bit of effort to maintain your database and tag everything properly I found I lost track of most of what I had written and couldn't find it easily. Sync could be hit & miss in my experience. Con: Progressive Web App (dealbreaker), markdown with no WYSIWYG editor (dealbreaker for me).Pro: the tag and query system allows for some incredible research potential, as you can filter by block rather than by note (as you would do in Evernote).Roam Research: Excellent modular tool for techie-type users who don't mind tinkering around with their app, though for the average consumer it could be overkill. Also, can be laggy/slow to load sometimes (unless they fixed that more recently). I remember about a year ago when the Notion servers went down, and everyone reliant on that data was cut off for hours. Pro: Database function is amazing (no other app can compete here). You can use note links to build connections, but you have to manually retrieve each note's link by visiting that note, which can be time-consuming. Con: laggy, and you can't arrange notes in a custom order.

Strong offline functionality and cross-platform sync. Web clipper is very good (though I rely on DevonTHINK for this as I run quite a large research database).

  • Pro: best search & sort function of any notetaking app I have used.
  • As someone who has used all 5, here is a quick breakdown:
